New Ron Paul flyer from New Hampshire bragging about his efforts to stop gay marriage.

What’s that? Ron Paul is just like every other Republican candidate ever? What a surprise!

I do not know how some people still like him!! This is the dude who said he thinks sexual harassment in the workplace should be legal and that if a woman (anyone, but he said woman specifically) doesn’t like being sexually harassed she should just get another job.

PEOPLE. THIS GUY IS A DOUCHEWAD.

In short ~Ron Paul is a bag of dicks~

Too bad he’s the only anti-war president. The only thing the president really controls is the army anyways. If the Democrats get another Super Majority they can override any veto he signs against gay marriage. I just feel that the rights of people abroad (the true majority) *outweigh* the rights gays. People are dying over there, with RP as president we won’t have as many troops (if any) stationed over there. No gays are dying or are going to die because of RP. I know this sounds really bad and I’m Pro Gay. I just feel that there are more pressing issues at hand.

Go back to civics class, kid. The President has both more and less power than you think.

The President is the main cheerleader of legislation, which is why their policies on the issues matter. Even if they don’t personally author bills, their plans factor heavily into major legislative choices (Obama with the health care reform bill, Bush with the tax cuts for the rich), and they have ways of strong-arming their will into practice. They can use executive orders, which are rarely challenged by Congress or the judiciary. They can also use federal agencies to force things that aren’t national laws to be enforced on a state-by-state basis. For example, the drinking age wasn’t moved from 18 to 21 by Congress. The Department of Transportation under Reagan simply threatened to remove federal highway funding from any state that chose not to raise their drinking age to 21. So Ron Paul could do a hell of a lot without Congress’ approval.

Congress could also do a lot without Ron Paul’s approval. For example, say both major parties decided they wanted war with Iran and Ron Paul as President was the only opposition (aside from a few people in Congress like Kucinich, Franken, Sanders, Frank, etc.). Congress declares war, not the President. And if he decided to rebel by commanding the troops not to fight, he could be impeached.

And you’re not actually pro-gay if you support someone whose goal it is to strip them of their rights. If you support Ron Paul, you’re not just supporting the couple of policies you agree with. You’re supporting giving him the power to enact the deplorable policies he’s attempted to pass against women (Sanctity of Life Act, plus the desire to repeal equal pay and sexual harassment laws), minorities (opposition to the Civil Rights Act and his 1980 and 1984 bills to allow states to resegregate schools), gays (DoMA, DADT, MPA, etc.), and non-Christians (We The People Act, which also affects the other listed groups). You support him because as a straight, cis white man, your life would not change under him. For the rest of us, though, these things do fucking matter.

^^^This

I understand that for some people, Ron Paul’s views on war are exactly what they want, and as someone who is personally non-violent, I can understand why they would feel that way, but…

I don’t understand how you can think that other people’s human rights are so unimportant that you can just dismiss it. How can you look at his policies and say, with all honesty, that his views on foreign policy make it okay that he is against someone’s right to be treated as a human being no matter their race, gender, or sexual orientation?

Since when can we overlook treating people as lesser beings?
