I was talking to a friend earlier and it came up that she reads Cosmo. I mean, really reads it. She goes to a store every month and buys a new one. She’s my age, in her middle 20s and I have to wonder (besides the obvious what sex position hasn’t been repeated at least 30 times) what its really doing to her esteem.
Cosmo goes out and claims itself to be a means of woman empowerment and a way to own their sexuality (though from a truly hertrosexist perspective), and I have no problem with some sexy suggestions. My issue lies in that every issue is geared towards how to please a man. I do like a few tips to keeping a lover content but I am also a participant in this and seeing as it’s a woman’s magazine I’m wondering why it isn’t about how to get yourself off, how to tell your lover what you like, how to direct when he’s going down on you, a comparison chart of oral vs vaginal sex, debunking sexual misconceptions of stds, pregnancy, or even fuckin of the rag. I would be happy with a full page spread of vibrators. Hell, an open discussion of various plastics of dildos.
There are SO SO SO many topics that really relate to female sexuality that they never do more than skim the surface of. And the guests! Sweet Jesus, I do not care what celebrity is fucking who. I know there’s many in North America who eat that shit up though and I can let them have that. But how about one issuse a year has a cover of a sexual educator, speaker, writer, hell even a woman of political power. I’m asking for one issue, it’s not that much.
Also, I hear the argument that Maxim is the male Cosmo. Wrong.
Maxim may still have pretty vapid articles but the issues aren’t about how to please your woman, it’s still how to make your woman please you.I mean is there anyone out there giving a fuck if women get to come?
❤❤❤
